Call for Papers

Co-organized by the Computing Society of the Philippines-Special Interest Group on Natural Language Processing (CSP-SIGNLP) and the National University Computing Research Center (NU CRC).

The 11th National Natural Language Processing Research Symposium (NNLPRS) will take place on April 24-25, 2015 at National University. NNLPRS is a regular gathering of researchers working on the analysis, processing, and generation of human languages by computing systems. This event marks a major milestone in the development of NLP research in the country, and intends to be the springboard towards more research and international networking. The past symposia have covered a wide range of topics in NLP and were graced by international invited speakers:

  • Prof. Robert Dale of Macquarie University, Australia in 2004;
  • Prof. Chu-Ren Huang from Institute of Linguistics in Academia Sinica of Taiwan in 2007;
  • Mr. Adam Pease of Articulate Software USA, and Prof. Gerald Nelson of the Chinese University of Hong Kong both in 2009;
  • Prof. Dekai Wu from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2010;
  • Prof. Hwee Tou Ng from the National University of Singapore in 2011; and
  • Prof. Chiu-Yu Tseng from Academia Sinica of Taiwan and Tod Allman of the Graduate Institute of Linguistics in 2014.

This symposium aims to encourage the submissions of current NLP research papers, to expose the attendees of selected institutions in the current trends and advances of NLP, and in exploring the challenges and prospects of conducting NLP research in both academic and industry settings. Specific objectives are:

  1. To establish as a mechanism for leveraging NLP research in institutions;
  2. To provide the attendees with orientation on NLP-based research and trainings on the use of various NLP tools; and
  3. To provide an avenue for the attendees to get assistance in the conduct of NLP-based researches.

THEME

With the theme “NLP and Social Media”, the 11th NNLPRS will be a venue for discussing the various challenges and opportunities that we face in integrating human language technologies to analyze social media. We also invite papers on preliminary works describing the challenges and opportunities faced by the authors. All accepted papers will be presented as part of technical sessions and published in a separate NNLPRS proceeding.

Relevant topics include but not limited to the following areas:

  • Discourse analysis
  • Digital signal processing
  • Generation
  • Information extraction
  • Information retrieval
  • Language resources and evaluation
  • Linguistics
  • Machine learning for natural language
  • Machine translation
  • Phonology and morphology
  • Semantics and ontology
  • Sentiment analysis, opinion mining and text classification
  • Sign language processing
  • Text summarization and generation
  • Word sense disambiguation

SMACS 2014

SMACS 2014 is the 7th Symposium on the Mathematical Aspects of Computer Science that will be held in the Philippines. SMACS 2014 is organized by the Computing Society of the Philippines and will be hosted by Ateneo de Naga University, Naga City.

SMACS was held first in 1997 (University of the Philippines, College Baguio), second in 2004 (University of the Philippines – Baguio), third in 2006 (Adventist University of the Philippines, Cavite), fourth in 2008 (University of the Philippines, Cebu Colleges), fifth in 2010 (University of the Philippines, Los Banos, Laguna), and sixth in Boracay Island, Malay, Aklan (La Carmela Resort and Hotel).

This year’s SMACS is divided into two parts, workshop (24-26 November 2014) and seminar (27-28 November 2014). The workshop is designed such that researchers and instructors/lecturers of computing and mathematical sciences could interact on selected topics. Topics of the workshop will be tutorial in character which would lead to possible research collaboration. The seminar will consist of paper presentations on researches in the mathematical aspects of computer science. There will be invited talks on the current and still potent area of mathematical aspects of computer science.

SMACS provides a venue for teachers, researchers and graduate students of Computer Science, Computing, and Mathematics to share and upgrade knowledge on areas of Computer Science which are mathematical or theoretical in character.
